This Indonesian-Vietnamese multicultural fusion wedding was nothing short of magical! If you are looking for a modern and tasteful way to infuse culture and meaningful details into your big day, look no further. Isa & Andrew’s stunning celebration is a beautiful example of how childhood wonder and nostalgia can define a theme and frame new beginnings with creativity, love, and whimsy.
The first venue Isa and Andrew had their eyes on was a local community garden, which they booked a year and a half in advance because it was so popular. Just over a month before the wedding date, the venue suddenly canceled due to a water main break. We contacted over 100 different venues, but only a few were available and could accommodate all the vendors already booked. Andrew discovered Olympia’s Valley Estate on TikTok, an idyllic farm and event space run by the same family for multiple generations. They knew this was the perfect spot for their special day.
Isa had a wedding Pinterest board for years but came to us to bring the vision together. Isa explained: “There was no shortage of meetings with our planners and they helped us narrow down the ideas into something more cohesive. Two Perfect Events was the backbone for this event!”
Their photographer, Hey Honey Photography, captured the day beautifully, so let's dive in!
These butterfly invitations were created by Hyegraph Invitations & Calligraphy with details illustrated by a friend of Isa and Andrew. Another friend hand-pressed hundreds of hydrangeas, each laid flat under a custom wax seal with a Chinese “double happiness” symbol for joy and marriage celebrations.
Isa and Andrew were ‘dressed to the nines’ for both the ceremony and reception. After trying on over 50 dresses, Isa found this Marchesa Bridal gown that perfectly matched the wedding’s Tangled-inspired ethereal garden theme.
The gown was constructed of an airy, ivory tulle held together by satin boning with floral appliqué cascading down the skirt. Isa opted for custom tulle cape sleeves rather than a traditional veil. Her family members hand-sewed fabric flowers onto the cape sleeves to match the dress.
To tie the look together, she wore Bella Belle lavender shoes, delicately embroidered and embellished with butterflies.
Andrew partnered with a local tailor, Anatoly & Sons, to design a timeless, bespoke tuxedo made with Japanese fabric and dyed with squid ink, making it one of the blackest fabrics on the market.
Details for this gorgeous wedding abound in floral arrangements by Fleurisse Design in pastel pinks, oranges, blues, and greens. Their inspiration stemmed from many different places: east-meets-west garden party, Peranakan nonya (a unique culture that is formed through the marriage of Malay and Chinese during the older eras), and Disney’s Tangled!
Their guests enjoyed delicious appetizers followed by an 8-course Asian-fusion dinner menu catered by S+S Gastro Grub.
The newlyweds got the most charming photos in a row boat right near their ceremony location under the willow trees. How magical is that? It felt like a scene straight out of Tangled.
Isa’s sparkling ring is from Evorden Jewelry and her donut glazed nails brought the perfect shimmer to her look.
Some advice to future brides from Isa: “Build in time just to be with each other. We were surprised by how much quiet alone time we had, and that protected our peace.”
Walking into the reception space, the lovely floral aroma was the first thing everyone noticed.
The dramatic waterfall string light installation and floral chandeliers completely covered the barn’s high vaulted ceilings. Isa wanted the space to feel as magical and ethereal as possible, and this is about as close as one can get to a real-life Disney movie!
Isa & Andrew took their east-meets-west theme literally by prioritizing the meshing of their dual Asian and American identities. They incorporated Chinese-Vietnamese details like a custom ‘double happiness’ LED sign made by Andrew, an ancestral welcome table, and an 8-course dinner menu—juxtaposed with a venue as Americana as a barn. Weddings traditionally are a joining of two family cultures, so their goal was for “the wedding to feel like a melting pot of community, or to feel immersed in the love of our friends and family.”
Guests left messages full of love and memories for Isa and Andrew on this audio guestbook–such a fun and creative wedding keepsake that the couple will treasure forever.
The dessert spread left a lasting impression! Their cake was made by Trizia Cake Artistry and the Indonesian desserts were catered by NUSA.
Isa’s second outfit was a short, sparkling dress from Bronx and Banco with a beautiful two-layer flowing capelet handmade last minute by her friend. Andrew changed into a custom shirt inspired by his Chinese-Indonesian-American heritage—it was a Chinese cheongsam (traditional Chinese attire) made with Indonesian batik fabric, embroidered with idiosyncratic imagery like the lion turtle from Avatar: The Last Airbender.
“We love making homemade ice cream, so we catered from Smitten Ice Cream to have live-churned liquid nitrogen ice cream. We also catered Indonesian desserts from NUSA, owned by a woman who founded the Berkeley Indonesian Student Association (BISA), which Andrew was a part of as an undergrad.” - Isa
As a gift, Andrew’s parents organized a surprise lion dance performance by Lion Dance Me for the reception. Lion dances are traditionally at weddings to ward off evil spirits and to bless a marriage to be long-lasting and happy–It’s also an exciting way to incorporate Chinese culture and entertain guests!
Isa & Andrew’s wedding was a vibrant and enchanting celebration that seamlessly blended diverse cultural influences with memorable personal touches. The day was a harmonious fusion of garden party aesthetics, Chinese-Vietnamese traditions, California farmstead, and the charm of Disney's Tangled – truly magical and unforgettable!
